The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday introduced five new bills for first reading, marking another step toward updating laws that govern the country’s health and judicial institutions.

The Nigerian Senate, during plenary on January 29, 2026, formally presented five bills for first reading.

The proposed legislation was sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele Michael Opeyemi, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District. The bills seek to amend existing laws and address operational gaps within key health and justice sector institutions.

Among the bills introduced are amendments to the Federal Medical Centre Act and the Federal High Court Act, as well as proposed changes to the Court of Appeal Act. Also included are amendments to the University Hospitals (Reconstitution of Board, etc.) Act and a bill seeking to establish the National Hospital for Women and Children in Abuja.

All five bills were read for the first time without debate and passed this initial legislative stage during the Senate session.
