MURIC Calls for Removal of INEC Chair Over Bias Claims
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has renewed its demand for the removal of INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, citing concerns over his neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement on Thursday, January 29, 2026, MURIC’s Kano State Chairman, Malam Hassan Sani Indabawa, said the group supports an earlier warning by the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN), which stated that Muslims may not accept elections conducted under Amupitan’s leadership. The SCSN made the remark during its Pre-Ramadan gathering in Abuja on January 28.
MURIC referenced a 2020 legal brief authored by Amupitan on alleged genocide against Christians, describing it as divisive and contrary to the Federal Government’s position. The group also cited claims that the INEC chairman was part of the ruling party’s legal team during the 2023 presidential election petition.
According to MURIC, Amupitan’s continued stay in office could undermine public trust in the electoral process. The group is calling for his removal or resignation, insisting that only a neutral INEC leadership can ensure credible elections in 2027
