The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, directed the Management of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to suspend its demand of National Identity Number (NIN) from prospective candidates.

The House resolved that until 80 per cent of Nigerians have obtained NIN, the boar should not implement the policy.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Mrs Zainab Gimba under matters of public importance at plenary presided by the Speaker, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.

Moving the motion, the lawmaker lamented that the request by JAMB has put an untold hardship on prospective Candidates especially those in the rural area of the country.

According to the lawmaker, “In some constituencies, it will take them up to five hours to get to the urban centres to get internet services. It is an information to further hardship. It is also inconclusive. If JAMB wants to assist the National Identity Management Commission NIMC, in any form, this is not the way to go about it, there are other better ways to do it.”

The House adopted the motion when it was put to a voice vote by the presiding officer, Femi Gbajabiamila.

It was later referred to the Committees on National Population Commission and Tertiary Education for further legislative action.
