National Assembly Resumes Plenary, Honours Late Senator Akwashiki
The National Assembly has resumed plenary for the 2026 legislative year, marking the return of both the Senate and the House of Representatives after the end-of-year recess.

Proceedings opened on a somber note as lawmakers in both chambers observed a moment of tribute in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who died on December 31, 2025. The lawmaker represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District on the platform of the Social Democratic Party and served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Air Force.
During the session, legislators expressed condolences to his family, constituents, and the people of Nasarawa State, describing him as a committed public servant whose contributions would be remembered.
In the House of Representatives, members reiterated their resolve to pursue legislative measures aimed at national development, democratic consolidation, and improved welfare for citizens. Lawmakers pledged to address key national issues through cooperation and sustained legislative engagement.

Meanwhile, the Senate received a letter from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requesting the confirmation of Mr. Oyewole Joseph as a Justice of the Supreme Court. The President also transmitted several bills to the National Assembly, including proposed amendments to the Court of Appeal Act, the Federal High Court Act, and multiple health sector-related laws. The bills were subsequently referred to relevant committees for further consideration.
Plenary sessions in both chambers were adjourned, with the Senate expected to reconvene o yesterday on the Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
