Insecurity the major reason for border closure: Yakubu

Words: Ihegazie Hope Chidinma

The Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial, Sen. Oseni Yakubu has directed the border temporal closure ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari as a result of security challenges facing the country.

Yakubu made this disclosure on Wednesday during an interview with NASSNEWS in National Assembly, Abuja.

Yakubu explained that the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria is slowing down particularly because arms smuggling through the borders and foreign fighters coming to boost the insurgency of boko haram and their Islamic State of West Africa ISWA collaborators has been jolted as a result of the border closure.

In his words, “The security of this country is in the hand of the President so he is looking for any measure to solve the issue.

“The closure is temporal and we want to use the opportunity to charge those incharge of the border so that they will look into the security issue.

He further added that, “Insecurity has a direct relation with idealness, unemployment and will still be on the light until the country fight against unemployment.

“If you ask me, I will advise that the money the country is spending on security should go to empowerment, employment, agriculture because once the people are engaged, insecurity will die off immediately”.

He advised Nigerians to actually take time to scrutinize everything before adopting any step.

He therefore reassured friendly countries around the world that the border closure should not be perceived as a punitive measure targeted at them but a necessary action to save our economy from collapse and protect our people from terrorism and insecurity.
