SUSWAM BLAMES GENCOS, TCN, OTHERS FOR ELECTRICITY CHALLENGE

The Chairman Senate committee on power, Senator Gabriel Suswam (Benue PDP)has blamed the GENCOS, TCN AND DISCOS for the unending electricity problem in the country.

 

The lawmaker made this known at the end of investigative public hearing at the senate on a motion titled; ‘power sector recovery plan and the impact of covid-19 pandemic’ on Tuesday, 23rd June, 2020. Suswam said lack of synergy between the GENCOS, TCN AND DISCOS has contributed a lot in the challenges facing the power sector.

He further said out of the six GENCOS that was privatised, only few is performing optimally.

In her presentation, the Executive Secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies, Dr. Joy Ogaji, identified the inability to access foreign exchange, Regulatory risk and GENCOS corporate governance as some of the challenges.

She further described the liberalisation of the market for operators, transparency in billing collection and remittance and effectiveness of all market agreement as panacea to Nigeria electricity challenge.

Further more the Sen. Suswam faulted the presentation of representative of the market operator during the hearing.

He said: “Your presentation is not fair assessment, you showed a lot of bias in your presentation.This Investigative hearing is not punitive, your presentation is misleading, we want solution, let us address the problem in the entire value chain.

“You are protecting yourself, because administratively, you are under Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)” Suswam lament.

In his contribution, Senator Adamu Aliero who is also a member of the committee noted that “no where in the world where privatisation is done without government intervention”.
