The Senate on Thursday honoured the late businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Bature Abdulaziz, during plenary, paying tribute to his contributions to commerce, peacebuilding, and national development.
The motion was led by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who traced Dr. Abdulaziz’s journey from Kano’s Adakawa Quarters to national prominence. He described the late industrialist as a strong advocate for indigenous traders and a key figure in the development of major markets across Northern Nigeria.
According to Senator Barau, Dr. Abdulaziz combined business success with a deep commitment to social justice, peace, and economic empowerment, leaving behind a model worthy of emulation.
In response, Senate President Godswill Akpabio led the chamber in a minute of silence and extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the Kano State Government.
Lawmakers noted that Dr. Abdulaziz received more than 150 awards during his lifetime, including the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), and also served as a United Nations Ambassador of Peace.
The Senate also recalled his role as founder of the Patriotic Elders Network for Peace and Justice and his leadership across several trade unions, describing his legacy as one that went beyond business to promote unity and economic stability.
The session ended with prayers for his repose, as the Senate described him as a towering figure in Nigeria’s private sector.
