Senate Eulogizes the late Former President Shagari
The Senate today during plenary Eulogized the late former President Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari.
Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari who was the first executive President of Federal Republic of Nigeria following his election to the office in 1979, died on Friday, 28th December, 2018 at National Hospital, Abuja after a brief illness.
Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari was born on 25th February, 1925 in Shagari Town in the present Sokoto State, the seat of the Caliphate. He started his education in a Quaranic school at a very early age in Shagari Town.
He was sworn in as the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria on 1st October, 1979 following his election to that office on the platform of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN), a political party which he was a founding member.
The Senate convinced that Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari had a distinguished unblemished public service record spanning over a period of 30 years, that he was forthright, a nation builder, a distinguished stateman that contributed greatly to the growth and development of democracy in Nigeria.
The Senate further notes that Shagari’s death is a grave loss not only his immediate family, to his constituents in Sokoto South Senatorial district, to the people of Sokoto State, but also to the entire Nigeria people.
