Reps pass Bill banning use of plastic bags

 

A Bill banning the use of plastic bags by individuals and manufacturing companies in the country has been passed by the House of Representatives.

The bill passed on Tuesday which seeks to address waste management and protection of the environment also comes with a fine not exceeding N500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both fine and imprisonment for any offender upon conviction.

The newly passed bill which follows a proposed law sponsored by Hon. Edward Pwajok also prescribes a fine of N5 million for companies guilty of the aforementioned offences.

The Plastic bag prohibition bill provides for: “an act to prohibit the use, manufacture and importation of all plastic bags used for commercial and household packaging in order to address harmful impacts to oceans, rivers, lakes, forests, environment as well as human beings andalso to relieve pressure on landfills and waste management and for other related matters.”
