REPS MOVES TO TACKLE ACCOMMODATION PROBLEMS CONFRONTING MEMBERS OF THE ARM FORCES.

The house of Representatives moves Motion to declare state of emergency on accommodation problems confronting members of the arm forces. The house noted that the armed forces amongst others defends Nigeria from external aggression and they maintain Nigeria territorial integrity, secure Nigeria’s borders from violation and suppress Oppression. The armed forces was established by section 217 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the year 1999. The house is worried that despite the colossal sums appropriated every year in the Federal budget for the rehabilitation of military barracks, and other measures e.g establishment of the Presidential committee on barracks rehabilitation, still the residence of men and women of the armed forces continue to be inadequate and grotesque. Hon Garbi during the plenary thanked the mover of the motion, then he said that barracks that were built during the colonial era are still Left that way without renovation . He made it known that it is a National embarrassment for the country not to be able to properly accommodate it military. This motion was moved as a result of the press constant airing and writings on the challenges of armed forces personnel. The house urge the ministries of defence, justice, power, works and housing and the service chiefs to immediately initiate an iner- ministerial collaboration towards resolving all pending litigation with the view to proffer solutions to the acute problem. The house also mandate a committee on defence, Army, Navy, Air force, justice and housing to liaise with the ministries of defence, power, works and housing, justice and the service chiefs with a view to appraising and monitoring the progress of the inter- ministerial collaboration towards urgently resolving the issue of accomdation for personnel of the arm forces and report back within three weeks for further legislative action.
