Fresh tension has erupted in the Nigerian Senate as Senator Adams Oshiomhole openly criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio over recent amendments to the Senate Standing Orders.

Oshiomhole described the move as unfair and politically motivated, alleging that the amendment was designed to protect certain individuals and restrict future contenders for Senate leadership positions.

The former Edo State governor questioned the morality behind introducing a rule requiring senators to complete at least two uninterrupted terms before qualifying for principal offices, noting that some current leaders themselves did not meet such conditions before assuming office.

He further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to closely monitor developments within the Senate, warning that internal actions capable of undermining democratic principles should not be ignored.

The controversy sparked reactions across political circles, with critics arguing that the amendment could sideline first time lawmakers and influential politicians ahead of the 2027 political permutations.

Following widespread backlash, the Senate reportedly reversed parts of the controversial amendments amid concerns that some provisions may conflict with constitutional principles.

The development has now intensified political tension within the upper legislative chamber, exposing growing cracks among top power blocs in the National Assembly.
