NCC and NDPC Join Forces to Boost Data Protection in Nigeria’s Telecom Sector

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance data privacy and protection across the country’s telecommunications industry, aiming to better safeguard personal information and improve regulatory coordination.

The NCC and NDPC have agreed to collaborate more closely to strengthen data protection in Nigeria’s telecom sector. The MoU outlines how both agencies will work together to clarify responsibilities and support consumer privacy as digital services expand.

Dr. Aminu Maida, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, said protecting personal data is essential for trust and growth in the communications industry. He highlighted the sector’s rapid expansion from about 500,000 connected lines to over 170 million active connections and stressed that users must understand their data rights to prevent misuse.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the NDPC, described the partnership as vital for effective data protection. He noted that the agreement is meant to complement, not replace, the NCC’s regulatory role and emphasized the need to begin implementation quickly.

Both agencies agreed that working together will improve oversight and provide clearer guidance on handling personal information within the telecom industry.
