The IGP Tunji Disu has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of 28years old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, following widespread public outrage over the incident.
Speaking on the development, senior police officer Tunji Disu confirmed that the officers implicated in the shooting would face disciplinary action, including prosecution, in line with police regulations.
According to reports, the deceased had gone to collect a waybill on behalf of a friend when he was stopped by police officers for a routine check. During a search of the package, officers allegedly discovered illicit items concealed within.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victim repeatedly pleaded with the officers, insisting that he was unaware of the contents of the package and offering to take them to the rightful owner.
Despite his pleas, the situation reportedly escalated. Sources claim that an officer initially attempted to discharge his weapon but it failed. A subsequent shot, however, struck the victim, leading to his death.
The incident has since sparked widespread condemnation, particularly on social media, where many Nigerians have questioned the use of lethal force despite the victim’s claims of innocence.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has been left devastated by the loss. His mother, in tears, lamented that this is the second time she has lost a son under similar tragic circumstances, describing the pain as unbearable.
His brother also expressed grief, revealing that Mene Ogidi was an aspiring musician with promising potential and a strong support system for the family.
The case has further intensified national conversations around police conduct and accountability, with growing calls for justice and reforms within the Nigeria Police Force.
