ECOWAS Parliament Adopts AfCFTA Resolutions at Abuja Session
The 2026 First Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament ended in Abuja with the adoption of key resolutions on the African Continental Free Trade Area and approval of the parliament’s 2026 work plan.

The 2026 First Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament concluded in Abuja after days of deliberations held alongside a parliamentary seminar focused on regional trade and integration.
The seminar, themed Deepening regional integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA): Opportunities and challenges for expanding intra community trade within the ECOWAS region, examined ways member states can take advantage of the continental trade pact.
During the final sitting, lawmakers considered and adopted draft resolutions on the African Continental Free Trade Area. The parliament also approved its comprehensive work plan for the 2026 legislative year.

In his remarks, the First Deputy Speaker reaffirmed the parliament’s commitment to promoting democracy, peace and unity across West Africa. He said the regional body would continue to support policies and initiatives that strengthen integration and cooperation among member states.
