Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu Bows To Pressure, Pulls Controversial Indigeneship Bill

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, CFR, has formally withdrawn the proposed Indigeneship Bill from the National Assembly to allow for further legislative consultations

In a statement released on the night of Tuesday, July 29, Kalu explained that the decision was driven by concerns and thoughtful feedback received from a wide range of stakeholders.

He further disclosed that a Bill Analysis Report submitted by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) highlighted the need to pause and reassess the bill at this time.

“States should enact laws enabling settlers to enjoy equal rights and privileges as indigenes, in line with constitutional provisions. While the bill aims to promote inclusivity, passing it in its current form may create complications over time, especially regarding the possibility of multiple or dual indigeneship,” the NILDS report stated.

Kalu, who also chairs the Constitution Review Committee in the House, emphasized his dedication to ensuring that all legislative proposals align with the will and aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“As elected representatives, our duty is to ensure that every piece of legislation we propose resonates with the desires of the people. The Constitution Review process remains transparent, inclusive, and participatory. No bill or amendment will move forward without broad consultation and consensus,” he affirmed.

Kalu concluded by urging citizens to remain actively involved in the constitutional review process and continue engaging with the House Committee as Nigeria works toward becoming a more equitable, unified, and prosperous nation.
