Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola on Friday lamented about the treatment and facilities at Nigeria Correctional Service Nationwide.
The former governor of Osun state shows worried by the plight of inmates , he noted that the Nigeria Correctional service could however be turn into enterprise centers.
Aregbesola, who spoke at the 2020 Budget defence of ministry of interior in Abuja revealed that contrary to what obtain in advanced economies, the average prisoner in Nigeria is fed by N730 daily, pointing that the amount is grossly inadequate.
He cited the United States of America where N31,000 is being expended on an average prisoner.
“We are all concerned about the condition of Nigeria concentration camps. We can turn our Correctional Service into enterprise centre”
The Minister further disclosed how 40 fire fighting vehicles were manufactured for Nigeria Fire Service by the Turkish government but the government couldn’t pay for it
Meanwhile, Senator Chukwuka Utazi (Enugu north) senatorial district, who sought for intervention of Aregbesola . Utazi decried the condition of Nigeria Correctional Service facilities across the nation.
He explained that he has been to prison facilities during oversight functions, stressing that the living condition of inmates was not anything near human treatment.
