Senate Questions Finance Ministers on 2025 Budget as 2026 Plan Takes Shape
Nigeria’s Senate on Tuesday questioned top members of the federal government’s economic team over how the 2025 budget has been implemented, as lawmakers begin work on the 2026 spending plan.

The Senate Committee on Appropriations met with key finance officials to review revenue performance and government spending under the 2025 budget. The session was chaired by Solomon Olamilekan Adeola alongside Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno.
Lawmakers asked detailed questions about revenue targets, borrowing, and how funds released so far have been used. They said the review would guide decisions on allocations in the 2026 budget.

Leading the government delegation was Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Wale Edun.He was joined by Minister of Budget and Planning Atiku Bagudu, Minister of State for Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite, Accountant General of the Federation Shamseldeen Ogunjimi and Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service Zacch Adedeji.
The officials defended the government’s handling of the 2025 budget and outlined steps being taken to improve revenue collection and control spending.
Senators stressed that performance under the current budget would influence the structure of the 2026 estimates, especially funding for infrastructure and social services. The meeting ended with a pledge from both sides to tighten revenue measures and ensure better use of public funds in the coming year.
