Nigeria, Germany Pledge Closer Ties in Energy, Security and Global Affairs
Nigeria and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, with renewed focus on energy development, security cooperation, and collaboration in international forums.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Her Excellency Annett Günther, in Abuja for discussions aimed at deepening cooperation between both countries.
Welcoming the German envoy, Ambassador Ahmed restated Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining open and constructive engagement with Germany. He noted that Nigeria values its longstanding relationship with Germany and remains ready to advance discussions on areas of shared interest.

Ambassador Günther expressed appreciation for the steady growth in relations between the two countries. She referenced the successful Nigeria Germany Bi-National Commission held in November 2025, describing it as an important step in strengthening cooperation.
A key part of the meeting focused on support in international institutions, particularly within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Ambassador Günther recalled the 2024 exchange of notes on mutual backing for respective candidatures and thanked Nigeria for its support. She reiterated Germany’s support for reforms that would give Africa greater representation on the Security Council.
Both sides also discussed cooperation in the energy sector, especially in transmission and distribution infrastructure. The German Ambassador highlighted Germany’s continued interest in supporting Nigeria’s efforts to improve its energy systems. She expressed hope that outstanding administrative processes would soon be concluded to allow key projects backed by German investment and technical expertise to move forward.
In response, Ambassador Ahmed assured the German envoy that the Ministry would review pending matters related to reciprocal arrangements in multilateral engagements. He also acknowledged Germany’s role in supporting Nigeria’s economic development, particularly in energy and infrastructure.

Security cooperation was another area of discussion. Ambassador Günther stated that Germany remains willing to expand collaboration in capacity-building initiatives and other areas aimed at promoting regional stability and addressing common security challenges.
The meeting ended with both sides reaffirming their shared commitment to sustained cooperation, mutual respect, and practical partnerships that support development and stability.
