  • In today’s plenary session, Rt. Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, passionately advocated for urgent action to address the existential threat posed by perennial erosion along the banks of the River Niger in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Highlighting the dire situation faced by communities such as Abala-osumili, Utchi, Okpai, Abalagada, Aboh, Adai-Obiaka, Utuokwu, Umuolu, and Onyia, Hon. Ezechi underscored the urgent need for intervention to avert further devastation and safeguard the vulnerable populations.

The house unanimously adopted Hon. Ezechi’s motion, which called upon the Federal Government, specifically the Ecological Project Office, to prioritize the swift construction of shoreline protection measures for these communities. Additionally, the motion urged collaboration between the Federal Ministries of Environment and Niger Delta Affairs to address the erosion crisis through dredging the River Niger and sand filling the affected communities, thereby mitigating environmental damage and promoting sustainable development in the region.

  • Furthermore, the house tasked the House Committees on Environment, Niger Delta Ministry, and Ecological Fund with ensuring strict adherence to these resolutions, emphasizing the importance of timely and effective implementation to protect the livelihoods and well-being of the affected communities.
