Court orders Reps to halt processes on controversial Infectious Diseases Bill
June 2, 2020

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday has ordered the House of Representatives to stop further processes on the controversial Infectious Diseases Bill pending the determination of a suit brought before it.

The court ordered the Green Chamber to regularise its processes filed before the court in response to the suit challenging the Bill before the house.

Justice Ifeoma Ojukwu said the respondents failed to attach evidence of penalty for late filing of the motion for the extension of time to regularise their reply to the suit.

She reiterated an earlier directive to parties not to take any step to undermine the jurisdiction of the court in the subject matter.

A former Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye had dragged the Femi Gbajabiamila-led House of Representatives to court over the bill.

Melaye asked the court to declare that the bill constitutes a gross abuse, and is likely to infringe upon, his fundamental rights if eventually passed into law.
