Freetown, Sierra Leone

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps (NTAC), Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub, has successfully led a high-level Nigerian delegation on a strategic Monitoring and Evaluation Mission to the Republic of Sierra Leone as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations, deepen South-South Cooperation, and advance the foreign policy objectives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

The delegation, which included the Director of Programmes, Ambassador Bello A. Jaye, and other senior officials of the Corps, undertook the mission to assess the impact and effectiveness of Nigerian Technical Aid Corps Volunteers serving in Sierra Leone, while also exploring new opportunities for collaboration and partnership in critical sectors of national development.

The mission is in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic engagement, promoting regional integration, fostering human capital development, and consolidating mutually beneficial partnerships across Africa. It further highlights the strategic role of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps as one of Nigeria’s foremost instruments of technical diplomacy and international development cooperation.

As part of the official engagements, the Director-General paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education of the Republic of Sierra Leone, where he was warmly received by the Honourable Minister, Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie, and the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mohamed Sheik Karbo.

Discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening educational cooperation between both countries through academic partnerships, capacity-building initiatives, technical support programmes, knowledge exchange, and human resource development. The Director-General reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to supporting educational advancement across Africa through the deployment of highly qualified Nigerian professionals under the NTAC Scheme.

Rt. Hon. Yusuf Buba Yakub emphasized that education remains a critical driver of sustainable development, economic growth, innovation, and regional integration. He further reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to supporting sister African nations through strategic partnerships that enhance institutional capacity and promote long-term development outcomes.

The delegation also visited the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Sierra Leone, where they were received by the Deputy Minister of Health, Prof. Charles Seusse, and the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Phillip D. Karsho.

At the meeting, discussions centred on expanding bilateral cooperation in the health sector through technical assistance, professional development, healthcare capacity building, and the deployment of skilled Nigerian healthcare professionals to support healthcare delivery and strengthen medical services in Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the engagements, the Director-General reiterated that the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps remains a vital instrument for advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives by promoting goodwill, fostering African solidarity, facilitating knowledge transfer, and enhancing cooperation among developing nations. He stressed that the Corps continues to make significant contributions to sustainable development and shared prosperity across Africa and beyond.

A major highlight of the mission was the monitoring and evaluation of twenty-four (24) Nigerian Technical Aid Corps Volunteers currently serving in various educational and health institutions across Sierra Leone. The exercise provided an opportunity for the delegation to assess the volunteers’ performance, impact, achievements, and challenges, as well as evaluate the overall effectiveness of the Technical Aid Corps Scheme in the host country.

The Director-General commended the volunteers for their professionalism, dedication, patriotism, and exemplary conduct, describing them as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria whose services continue to make meaningful contributions to their host institutions while strengthening the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

He further praised the volunteers for projecting a positive image of Nigeria through the transfer of valuable knowledge, skills, and technical expertise, which continue to contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Sierra Leone.

The delegation expressed profound appreciation to the Government and people of the Republic of Sierra Leone for their warm reception, hospitality, and continued support for the Nigerian Technical Aid Corps Programme.

Special commendation was also extended to the Head of Chancery at the Nigerian High Commission in Freetown, Mrs. Ivie Okojie-Imarah, and the NTAC Desk Officer, Mr. Rimdap R. Samson, for their exceptional commitment, effective coordination, facilitation of official engagements, and logistical support, which contributed immensely to the successful execution of the mission.

Their professionalism and dedication ensured the seamless conduct of meetings, courtesy visits, monitoring activities, and other official engagements undertaken by the Nigerian delegation throughout the visit.

The mission further reinforced the longstanding and cordial relationship between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Sierra Leone and reaffirmed the shared commitment of both nations to promoting sustainable development, regional cooperation, capacity building, and African unity.

The Nigerian Technical Aid Corps remains steadfast in advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities through impactful technical cooperation programmes that continue to strengthen diplomatic ties, enhance Nigeria’s international standing, promote South-South Cooperation, and contribute meaningfully to socio-economic development across Africa and the Global South.
