The National Assembly is set to resume plenary sittings following its year-end recess, with lawmakers expected to turn their attention to the review of the 1999 Constitution, proposed amendments to the Electoral Act, and consideration of the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

Legislative activities are expected to gather momentum as both chambers of the National Assembly return to full sittings, with several high-profile national issues topping the agenda.

Among the priority matters is the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution. Speaking before the recess, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu, said the report of the Constitution Review Committee is ready for final consideration by the Senate.

He explained that the remaining task is for senators to consider the report clause by clause, a process he said would commence immediately after plenary resumes and would bring the review exercise to a close.

The Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill is also expected to receive urgent attention, particularly in view of statutory timelines ahead of the 2027 general elections. Adaramodu noted that while the House of Representatives has already passed its version of the bill, the Senate is expected to conclude its own consideration once legislative business resumes fully.

On the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the Senate spokesman said lawmakers would intensify scrutiny of the budget through committee work, harmonisation, and final passage to ensure early implementation of government policies, programmes, and projects.

Plenary proceedings are also expected to include formal sessions, as well as a brief tribute in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who passed away during the recess.

Observers say the return of lawmakers places renewed responsibility on the National Assembly to advance key reforms, strengthen democratic processes, and improve governance in the period ahead.
