Minister of Power Mr Bayou Adelabu Summons Power Sector Leaders Over Worsening Electricity Supply

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating electricity supply across Nigeria. In response, he has summoned key officials, including the CEOs of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a crucial meeting aimed at finding lasting solutions.

Despite increased power generation—now exceeding 4000MW—distribution companies are struggling to effectively deliver electricity to consumers, worsened by vandalism of power infrastructure in cities like Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan. The Minister stressed the Ministry’s ongoing pressure on GENCOs to improve performance and has directed TCN to prioritize repairs on damaged transmission towers and lines.

During recent visits to power plants, Adelabu acknowledged the challenges within the sector, including financial strains due to unpaid debts. Efforts are ongoing to resolve these debts to support better power generation and distribution. He affirmed a commitment to accountability, warning that non-performing distribution companies could face severe penalties, including license revocation.

He called on Nigerians to remain patient as the government works toward a more stable and efficient electricity supply nationwide.
