WHY SUPPRESS AN INDUSTRY THAT IS TRYING TO GROW REPS QUIZZED TELECOM OPERATORS

The Adhoc Committee Investigating the Operational Activities of Telecommunications Operators and Services yesterday brought together stakeholders in the Creative Industry and Telecommunication companies who have at one time pleaded for some time to get documents demanded by the committee in order to ascertain the veracity of claims made by the artistes.
The House Ad-Hoc Committee investigating allegations of Tax evasion stumbled upon some disturbing claims from Recording artiste dominating the music scene who claim that they have been ripped off of money totaling over 5 billion naira.
Hon Ahmad Abu from Niger state was commissioned to lead the Ad-hoc Committee on Telecommunications tasked with the responsibility to investigate tax evasion allegations and unsettled dues running into over 6.6 billion naira, but in the course of its investigative hearing, claims emerged from some music artiste who claimed that their Hit tracks are often used by Telco’s without commensurate payment reaching them for the use of their intellectual properties.
The spoke man for the creative Industry and artist Emeka Ike said 7.2 billion was realised from streaming on songs alone, not download. 20%
of the net income was supposed to be paid to the artist. He beckon on the Ad-hoc Committee to use their power to effect the international Standards of sharing formular for content owners and network Providers.
National Lottery Commission in it’s submissions also claimed to have suffered in the hand of the Lottery Operators who has not been remitting to the commission according to the law establishing it. Since inception of the Commission in 2009, we have received statory income of only 505 milliion from lottery Operators who have made triple on monthly basis.
Hon. Abu Ahmed tasked the Operators MTN, MTEL, Airtel and others to stop the claims to have invested huge amount in the industry, haven considered the Pioneer Status Incentives given to them on arrival which has aided them to have made more money than they have invested in the industry.
Other stakeholders like National Lottery Commission, Nigeria Trust Fund, Federal Inland Revenue Services, ICPC and EFCC were charged to divert attention to the music industry to clean up the mess and then make money for Federal Government. The creative Industry is new and doing well in terms of income capability. The Managing Director of 9mobile and Etiselat was issued a bench warrant for not appearing consecutively when invited. Hon. Darlington move the motion for the bench warrant.
