US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose heavy tariffs on French wine and champagne, escalating tensions with France over its hesitation to support a proposed international Board of Peace.
Trump said he was prepared to slap a 200 per cent tariff on French wine exports if France declined to participate in the initiative, which he said was aimed at promoting post-conflict reconstruction.
Speaking on the issue, Trump made direct reference to French President Emmanuel Macron, suggesting the tariffs could be used as leverage to secure France’s involvement. He added, however, that participation would ultimately remain France’s choice.
The proposed Board of Peace was originally introduced as a mechanism to oversee reconstruction efforts in Gaza, although its mandate does not specifically restrict its focus to the Palestinian territory.
Trump also disclosed details of a private message he received from Macron. In the exchange, the French leader reportedly acknowledged areas of agreement between both countries on Iran and Syria but questioned Trump’s interest in Greenland.
According to Trump, Macron proposed a meeting on the sidelines of the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, with the possibility of involving leaders or representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, Syria and Russia.
The French president also extended an invitation for a private dinner as part of the planned discussions.
