As he marks another year, Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru is being recognised not just for time spent in office, but for a track record of policies and programmes that have directly touched lives across Lagos East.
Fondly called the “DoingGood Senator,” Abiru currently represents Lagos East Senatorial District and chairs the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions. His transition from a successful banking career, where he served as Managing Director of Polaris Bank, into public service reflects a steady focus on discipline, structure, and results.
Since joining the Senate, Abiru has built a reputation for prioritising practical solutions. His legislative work includes contributions to key bills such as the Copyright Bill, Franchise Regulation Bill, and reforms to Nigeria’s insurance framework, alongside amendments to the CBN and NDIC Acts. These efforts are aimed at improving the country’s financial system and creating opportunities for businesses and creatives.
His interventions outside the National Assembly have also drawn attention. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he introduced a support scheme that provided monthly stipends to over 2,500 vulnerable constituents for nearly two years. Widows, elderly residents, unemployed youth, and persons with disabilities were among the beneficiaries.
Food distribution programmes have reached more than 80,000 households across the district, particularly during festive periods, helping to ease economic pressure on families.
Abiru has also focused on staying accessible. With liaison offices in Ikorodu, Epe, Kosofe, Ibeju-Lekki, and Somolu, constituents have multiple channels to engage directly with his office.
In education and infrastructure, his projects include classroom construction, learning materials for schools, and bursaries for students. Investments in healthcare facilities, road improvements, and solar-powered street lighting have contributed to better living conditions in several communities.
Economic support remains a major part of his agenda. A ₦300 million revolving loan scheme has provided low-interest funding to small businesses, artisans, and traders. In addition, 48 cooperatives received a combined ₦480 million in grants, while over 2,000 constituents have benefited from various empowerment initiatives.
One notable project is the SAIL Innovation Lab, established in partnership with his wife, which trains young people in digital and technology skills, positioning them for opportunities beyond Nigeria.
Colleagues in the Senate have also acknowledged his role, electing him Chairman of the Southern Senators’ Forum.
As he celebrates his birthday, supporters point to a mix of policy work and community based initiatives as evidence of his approach to representation, one that combines legislation with direct engagement on local needs.
Happy birthday to Senator Tokunbo Abiru.
