Senate Announces Two-Day National Security Summit Amid Rising Insecurity

‎Abuja, May 7, 2025- The Nigerian Senate has resolved to convene a two-day National Security Summit in Abuja to address the escalating insecurity across the country. The summit, prompted by a motion titled *“Urgent Need for a National Security Summit,”* will bring together delegates from federal, state, and local governments, as well as traditional institutions, to collaborate on viable solutions to the crisis.

‎The purpose is to reassess and reform Nigeria’s security policies through stakeholder engagement.

‎ The motion was championed by Senator Ibrahim Jimoh (Ondo South), alongside co-sponsors Senators Zam Titus (Benue North-West), Peter Onyeka Nwebonyi (Ebonyi North), and Ngwu Osita (PDP, Enugu West).

‎Senator Jimoh highlighted the impact of international conflicts, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and U.S. tariff disputes, on Nigeria’s food security and economic stability.

‎Senator Jimoh expressed grave concerns over pervasive violent crimes, including banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism, affecting both urban and rural areas. He also referenced Nigeria’s history of political crises—such as the 1953 Kano riots and 1960s Eastern Region conflicts—as a cautionary backdrop ahead of upcoming elections.

‎The Senate affirmed President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to tackling insecurity under the *“Renewed Hope Agenda”* but called for enhanced intelligence support, improved military funding, and alternative conflict-resolution strategies. The summit aims to uphold the *“Peace for All”* ideology while fostering actionable recommendations.

‎This initiative echoes the 9th Senate’s security summit led by former Senate President Ahmad Lawan, which sought to address nationwide insecurity. The current summit is expected to build on past efforts and deliver concrete solutions for government implementation.

‎The summit’s outcomes will be closely monitored as Nigeria seeks sustainable pathways to peace and stability.
