The Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana as the country celebrates its 69th Independence Anniversary, reaffirming the strong historical ties and enduring partnership between both nations.
Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed the message in a congratulatory note to Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, marking Ghana’s independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
Ghana made history as the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence, a moment that inspired liberation movements across the continent, including Nigeria’s own journey to sovereignty. Nigeria joins the people of Ghana in celebrating this historic achievement and acknowledges Ghana’s continued role in strengthening democracy, regional cooperation, and peaceful development in Africa.
Nigeria and Ghana maintain a longstanding relationship shaped by shared history, cultural connections, and a common vision for peace, prosperity, and African unity. Both countries have remained key supporters of democratic governance and stability in West Africa while working closely through regional and international bodies such as the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, and the United Nations.
Over the years, bilateral relations between Abuja and Accra have grown through regular diplomatic engagements and cooperation in areas including trade, education, energy, defence, migration management, and cultural exchange. The movement of citizens between both countries under regional free-movement arrangements has also strengthened economic and social ties.
Nigeria further acknowledged Ghana’s contributions to democratic governance and regional peace. Both countries have collaborated in peacekeeping operations, mediation efforts, and conflict-prevention initiatives across West Africa.
As Ghana marks this year’s independence anniversary under the theme Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope, Nigeria commended the resilience and determination of the Ghanaian people in advancing national development and democratic institutions. The government also recognized Ghana’s vibrant cultural heritage, highlighted during the country’s ongoing Heritage Month celebrations.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation with Ghana through expanded economic partnerships, closer diplomatic engagement, and stronger cultural and educational exchanges.
Nigeria expressed confidence that the longstanding relationship between Abuja and Accra will continue to grow in ways that promote regional prosperity and support the broader vision of a peaceful and united Africa.
On the occasion of Ghana’s independence anniversary, the Government and people of Nigeria extend their best wishes to the Government and people of Ghana for continued peace, democratic progress, and sustainable development.
