Nigeria has praised the outgoing Mexican Ambassador for his role in strengthening relations between both countries, while reaffirming its commitment to expanding cooperation across key sectors.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has commended the outgoing Ambassador of Mexico to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, for his contributions to deepening bilateral relations during his time in office.
The message was delivered on his behalf by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, during a farewell meeting held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Ortiz thanked the Nigerian government for its support throughout his nearly four-year tenure. He noted that relations between both countries improved during this period, particularly through increased diplomatic engagement and the introduction of structured dialogue platforms.
He highlighted key developments, including the establishment of the Nigeria–Mexico Chamber of Commerce and the appointment of an Honorary Consul in Lagos. He also pointed to progress in agricultural trade, especially collaboration under the SENASICA–NAQS framework, which has supported the export of hibiscus from Nigeria to Mexico.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary conveyed the Minister’s regrets for not attending the meeting due to prior commitments, while expressing appreciation for the Ambassador’s efforts in strengthening ties between the two countries.
He noted the steady growth in economic relations, including expanded trade and increased investment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He also encouraged Mexican businesses to explore opportunities in agriculture and agro-processing, assuring them of Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining a favourable investment climate.
The Permanent Secretary further stressed the need to broaden cooperation into other areas such as manufacturing, mining, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and the digital and creative economy.
He also pointed out that 2026 marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Mexico, describing it as an important milestone that reflects the strength and continuity of their partnership since 1976.
While acknowledging the strong diplomatic ties already in place, he emphasized the importance of sustained engagement and effective implementation of existing agreements.
In his response, Ambassador Ortiz expressed appreciation for the recognition and said he would continue to support relations between both countries even after leaving office.
The meeting ended with both sides restating their commitment to strengthening cooperation between Nigeria and Mexico.
