Lake Chad Basin: Nigeria Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Cooperation Bianca Odumegwu-OjukwuO

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca OdumegwuOjukwu, made this known while addressing the 71st Session of the Council of Ministers of the Lake Chad Basin Commission held in N’Djamena, Chad, from March 3 to 6, 2026.

According to the minister, the Commission remains an important regional platform for promoting environmental sustainability, food security, peace, and economic stability across the Lake Chad Basin.

A statement issued by her Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze, noted that the minister emphasized the strategic importance of the lake to millions of people in the region.

She described the Lake Chad Basin as more than a shared natural resource, noting that it serves as a critical lifeline for over 40 million people across member states.

Odumegwu Ojukwu also acknowledged that the security situation in the region remains a major concern. She commended the efforts of the Multinational Joint Task Force and the continued collaboration among member states in combating terrorism and violent extremism.

The minister, however, raised concern about the impact of climate change on Lake Chad, noting that the shrinking of the lake remains one of the most serious environmental challenges facing the region.

She stressed the need for practical, science based solutions to restore the lake and sustain the livelihoods of communities that depend on it.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also conveyed the appreciation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government, and the people of Nigeria for the endorsement of Nigeria’s candidate, Ibrahim Babani, as the new Executive Secretary of the Lake Chad Basin Commission for a four year term.

She described Babani as an experienced diplomat with strong expertise in water resources management, security, and regional cooperation.

The Nigerian delegation to the meeting included the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, and the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Emanso Umobong, among other officials.
