DELTA ASSEMBLY OKAY N1BN LOAN REQUEST FOR UBE FUND

The Delta State House of Assembly has ratified Governor Ifeanyo Okowa’s request for N1billion loan facility to enable the state access the Universal Basic Education Fund (UBE) by the federal government.


At the plenary session on Wednesday, the lawmakers gave approval to allow the loan to be exclusively applied for in the payment of 50 percent state counterpart funding by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) that will enable it access the federal government component fund for the execution of projects in the education sector in the state.


The ratification by the lawmakers was followed by a letter from Governor Okowa which was read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.


Part of the letter reads: “the credit loan facility was…approved by the State Executive Council at its ninth meeting which was held on Tuesday June 6, 2017. [T]he purpose of the letter is to request the ratification of the approval by the House to enable the state government obtain the loan facility.”


The majority leader, Tim Owherfere, moved that the application be accepted, adopted, and was seconded by Anthony Elekeokwuri Oboro Preyor.


In his debate, Mr. Tim Owherfere argued that the letter is to enable the state UBE funds, adding. “The loan facility as sought is to serve as counterpart funding, it is for the betterment of the state.


In a swift reaction, an All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain, Mr. John Attewere, alleged that the approval of the loan was a means for the governor to enrich himself, adding that his “SMART Agenda, portends pains for Deltans.”


While urging Deltans to resist unnecessary loans, the APC state stalwart lamented the huge debts of over N700billion in the state through loans, alleging the state is in a state of decayed infrastructure.


Similarly, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the state, Mr. Felix Oweh, described the governor’s prosperity for all Deltans as failure and urged him to brace up to the challenge of providing dividends of democracy for the people.

Rt. Hon. Monday Igbuya, the Speaker Of Delta State House Of Assembly, went half-unclad as he was recently conferred with a new title as the Ukude R’Ovie of Ughelli kingdom. The speaker also took a bow to His Royal Majesty, Dr Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III JP after his title conferment.
