The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Anthony Okoh, has called for strengthened collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force, the media, and the public, emphasizing that trust and partnership remain critical to effective policing in Nigeria.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Force Public Relations Office, DCP Anthony Okoh, made this known while speaking with representatives of NASSNews during a pre-meeting with the Inspector General of Police.
He highlighted that the theme of the recent police Day celebration was carefully selected by a committee to reflect the strategic policy direction of the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector General of Police.
He noted that modern policing cannot function effectively in isolation, stressing that collaboration with the public and key stakeholders is essential in addressing security challenges.
According to him, “there can be no efficient police force operating in isolation. Policing requires collaboration and the building of trust.”
He further explained that without the trust and confidence of the masses, citizens may be unwilling to provide vital information that could aid law enforcement efforts, thereby weakening the overall security framework.
The DCP emphasized the need to bridge the gap between the police and the public, stating that partnership and mutual understanding must remain at the core of policing strategies in the country.
During the engagement, members of NassNews also congratulated DCP Okoh Anthony on his recent achievement, commending his contributions and dedication to service. They further expressed their intention to present him with an additional token of recognition in appreciation of his efforts.
The interaction also provided an opportunity for media practitioners to advocate for closer working relationships with the Nigeria Police Force. They stressed the importance of building a direct communication channel between the police and the media, particularly within the National Assembly environment.
According to the journalists, fostering such collaboration would help bridge the information gap between the police, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, ensuring more accurate and timely dissemination of information.
They further proposed that, in the event of issues concerning the police force, the media should be engaged directly to provide proper coverage and informed reporting, rather than relying solely on indirect sources.
The media representatives reaffirmed their commitment to responsible journalism, noting that stronger engagement with the police would enhance transparency, improve public understanding, and promote accountability within the system.
In response, DCP Okoh Anthony welcomed the initiative, acknowledging the critical role of NassNews in shaping public perception and strengthening institutional trust.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to professionalism, integrity, and openness, assuring that efforts would be made to deepen collaboration with the media and other stakeholders in the interest of national security.
The meeting ended on a note of mutual understanding, with both parties expressing readiness to work together to build trust, improve communication, and enhance effective policing across the country.
