The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Saturday led a delegation of senior senators to Nasarawa State to commiserate with Governor Abdullahi Sule and the family of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
Akpabio was accompanied by principal officers of the 10th Senate, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Chief Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno, and other ranking lawmakers.
Speaking during the visit, Akpabio described Akwashiki’s passing as a painful loss to the Senate and the country, noting that the late lawmaker was known for his commitment to public service and close relationship with his constituents.
The Senate has lost a dedicated colleague whose contributions will be remembered, Akpabio said. “He served with sincerity and remained focused on representing the interests of his people.”
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin also paid tribute, recalling Akwashiki’s seriousness about legislative work and his constant engagement at the grassroots level.
Governor Abdullahi Sule thanked the Senate leadership for the visit, saying it reflected solidarity and respect for the late senator and the people of Nasarawa State.
We appreciate this show of support at a difficult time, Sule said. Senator Akwashiki was deeply rooted in the grassroots and worked tirelessly for the progress of Nasarawa State.
Senator Godiya Akwashiki died abroad on December 31, 2026, after a brief illness. He was buried in Lafia on Saturday amid prayers and tributes from political leaders, colleagues, and community members.
Born in Angba Iggah in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Akwashiki was elected to the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He previously served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly as Majority Leader and later as Deputy Speaker.
In the Senate, he chaired the Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, served as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, and later chaired the Committee on Air Force. He was widely known for his accessibility, grassroots appeal, and focus on policies aimed at improving the lives of his constituents.
