HOUSE MOVES TO COMMERCIALIZE WATER, PROPOSES KARO WATER SCHEME

The House of Assembly is on a process of commercializing water for a sustainable and continuous improvement of water supply to the public.

The House Committee on Water Resources chaired by Hon. Aliyu Ahman Pategi gave an insight during a two day Stakeholders interactive session which started on Tuesday. Bulk water rate should be treated with utmost priority.

The committee admonished stakeholders submissions on a regulatory frame work for the water resources sector in Nigeria, to provide for the equitable and sustainable development, management use and conservation of Nigeria’s surface water, ground water resources and other related matters.

Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Governor of Nasarawa State ably represented by Commissioner for water resources and rural development, Dr. Abdulkarim A. Kana in his presentation requested for the help of the committee on development of the Karo water scheme to solve the problem of water scarcity being faced by the people of the State.

Nassarawa is ready to pay for water but urbanization of dams is very necessary especially the Karo water scheme.

The request was highly favoured as the Chairman of the Committee on Water Resources, Hon. Aliyu Ahman Pategi gave a directive to the Permanent Secretary of Federal Ministry of Water Resources to add Karo Water scheme in the 2018 budget.

HOUSE COMMITTEE ON MARITIME SAFETY, EDUCATION AND ADMINISTRATION HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING

House committee on maritime safety, education and administration held a one day public hearing on two bills sponsored by James Manager (delta state)and Nelson Effiong(Akwa ibom state) at d senate chamber. The two bills focused on an act to establish the Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko,Delta state and other related matters, An act to establish the Maritime University,Oron,Akwa Ibom state and to make comprehensive provisions for its management and administration and other related matters.

The Chairman of the Committee Hon. Mohammed Umaru Bago in his address stated that the hearing is apt and timely as maritime sector is technical and specialised in nature and has the capability to sustain Nigeria’s economy with less dependence on oil hence the need to upgrade maritime academy Oron and establish Nigeria maritime University, Okerenkoko to international best standard. The universities when established will offer degree awards in nautical sciences, maritime education and non maritime courses.

During the hearing, various stakeholders were of the view that in Oron,infrastructures are already in place, they have met the condition s of NUC as well a the peaceful ambience of Akwa ibom state.

The hearing was declared opened by Hon Alhassan Ado Dogowa who represented the speaker House of Representative, Yakubu Dogara.

REPS PARTNERS UNICEF ON PROMOTING MATERNITY AND CHILD NUTRITION

Promoting Maternity and Child Nutrition is vital to Development in Nigeria.

Children between the early ages of 2 and 4 years are exposed to malnutrition which affects their growths. This is the reason for the two day Conference of Promoting Maternity and Child Nutrition in Nigeria held today on the floor of National Assembly by House Committee on Health Services in Conjunction with UNICEF.

Mother and child are inter-dependent on each other, as whatever affects the mother nutritionally during pregnancy might affect the child.

The Chairman of the Committee on Health Services, Hon. Chike Okafor in his Speech during the program made reference to his Burkinafaso experience which brought about the relationship between the Committee and UNICEF to bring about the Conference on Promoting Maternity and Child Nutrition in Nigeria.

The Deputy Chairman Hon. Muhammed Ahmed welcomed participants and encourage contributions at the realm of hearing.

The Speaker of House of Representatives ably represented by Hon. Binta Bello, Deputy Minority Whip, in her speech relay the commitment of the parliament to promoting maternity and child nutrition in Nigeria.

The country representative of UNICEF in her presentations displayed more attention on breast feeding of children within the first six months of their lives and nothing else.

The 36 States of the House of Assemblies were ably represented by their Speakers and other members.

The parliamentarians are expected to take back discussions to their various state house of Assemblies for implementing.

The representative of Child Intervention Fund CIF, said about one million children suffered under-nutrition in 2015, and about 5.5 million dollars was donation to tackle under-nutrition in thesame year, which is the concern of the world.

The representative of the Minister of Health in her presentations revealed the budgetary impact of tackling malnutrition in the country as less than 1.5 million dollars was allocated to tackle malnutrition in the Ministry Budget.

The conference was declared open by Hon. Binta Bello, the representative of the Hon.speaker yakubu Dogara.
