House of representative oppose Presidential directive on relocation of Electricity parastatal

The House of Representative committee on power says the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company remains a substantial part of the Ministry of Power in Nigeria.

Speaking at a panel session, the Chairman of House of representative on Power, Aliyu Magaji said the law that establishes the company is domiciled in Electric Power Sector Reform Act that backs the Ministry of Power operations in the country.

Aliyu argued that despite the presentation by the acting permanent secretary on power, Ahmed Abdul on the presidential directive reassigning the agency to the Ministry of Finance. The company’s position has not been ‘repealed or reviewed’ by lawmakers. Magaji stated that the relocation of NBET must have been done without due information provided to interpret the position of the law on such a company.

Earlier, he also asked the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to suspend the April 1st scheduled increase in electricity tariff while consultations are initiated.
